goodbye, mr. rigney

so rj's dead. muthafucker. the whole of the 1990s (well practically) following the events in randland and now the creator himself has passed on. i haven't gone back to my wot series for a while now, but hearing about it... you could've FINISHED THE GODDAMN 12th BOOK!!! FUCK!!!

um... i don't know how to explain what i'm feeling really, but this feels like a whole section, timeline type thing of my life has now very definitely moved into the category of the 'past'. you want to know about robert jordan, move to subsection 'yesterdays'. there are... things, events, people... that fall into this section now. stuff i'd forgotten or people i haven't been in touch with or songs i haven't heard in a while... like 'ordinary world' or hanging out with vidisha munim. it's a postcard now, not the still-tangible taste of yesterday's dessert. not that i had any, it's just a metaphor, really.

and pterry has alzheimer's. oh man, oh man. oh fuck, oh no. because i know one day it'll end and i'll be living in world with no new pterry books. no nanny ogg and no casanunda and no ridcully and mister vimes and carrot. no more rincewind.

so just i've made my peace with the fading of perrinwolf, i'm preparing myself for the end of rincewind. it's funny, it's not like i actually believe i'm these characters (my conversations with dogs notwithstanding, go goldeneyes!)... but they're... points of identification, maybe? something i want to be or in some ways reflections of the ideal me... slow, solid, deep-thinking, strong, loyal, able perrin, with a hint of beast just under the surface. :)
or funny, wisecracking, does-the-right-thing-at-the-wrong-time, foot-in-mouth, backhandedly heroic rincewind.

more and more often, the world is looking more and more pointless. days pass and 'our' world grows older... as do we. i guess rj got it right in one:

the wheel of time turns, and ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend.

goodbye, mr. rigney.
